Mississauga

Home, work and play... that's my Mississauga!

Made up of many small villages and towns Mississauga was unified as a city in Southern Ontario in 1974. Here are some quick facts to bring you up to speed about the great City of Mississauga

Canada's sixth-most populous municipality which has almost doubled in population every two decades; currently holding a population over 660,000 residents.

The name Mississauga originates from when trades had found First Nations groups around the Credit River; they had named them Mississaugas.

The various communities settled include: Lakeview, Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale (called Springfield until 1890), Lorne Park, Port Credit, Sheridan, Streetsville, Meadowvale and Summerville. Part of northeast Mississauga, including the Airport lands and Malton were part of Gore Township.

In 1873, with continued growth seen in this area, the Toronto Township Council was formed to oversee the affairs of the various villages that were unincorporated at that time.

Cottages were constructed along Lake Ontario in the 1920's as weekend getaway houses for weary city dwellers.

Malton Airport opened in 1937, which would later become Canada's busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport.

•      The Queen Elizabeth Way highway, one of the first controlled access highways in the world, opened in 1939. The first suburban developments occurred around the same time.

•     Development in general moved north and west from there; large scale developments such as in Meadowvale and Erin Mills sprung up in the 1960s and 70s.

•      With the exception of Port Credit and Streetsville, the township settlements were amalgamated by a somewhat unpopular provincial decree in 1968 to form the Town of Mississauga.

In 1974, both were annexed and Mississauga became a city. That year, the sprawling Square One shopping center opened.

Since 1974 Mississauga has only had Three Mayors; Dr. Martin Dobkin(1974-76), Ron A. Searle (1976-1978), and Hazel McCallion (1978- present)

Mississauga is recognized as the safest city in Canada for 8 consecutive years in a row.
